Rigour ∙ Enrichment ∙ Acceleration ∙ Challenge ∙ High-ability Learning
Pathways for ambitious learners who are ready to challenge themselves and reach their full potential.
REACH offers high-ability academic pathways for students who are curious, independent and ready to take ownership of their learning at a faster and deeper pace. From Entry (Year 7) through to VCE, these pathways nurture confidence and agency within a supportive, aspirational learning environment.
Each pathway combines accelerated learning in core subjects with opportunities for enrichment, mentoring and leadership development. REACH prioritises higher-order thinking that extends beyond rote learning and basic comprehension. Students develop advanced skills such as critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, logic and reflection, enabling them to engage deeply with complex ideas and apply their learning in meaningful ways.
Students can engage with REACH pathways at different points in their educational journey. Not every student commences REACH at Entry, although that option exists; access is guided by readiness, evidence and personalised pathway planning. Students may access extension, early VCE and university pathways, and benefit from partnerships with Swinburne Children’s University, CHES, Deakin University, the University of Melbourne and the Alpine School of Leadership.
This flexible and personalised approach allows students to access multiple learning pathways and opportunities. REACH intentionally develops the same advanced capabilities prioritised by high-ability programs across Victoria, supporting students to thrive academically while building independence, agency and confidence.
At Bundoora Secondary College, REACH reflects our commitment to contemporary, innovative learning that prepares students for the real-world challenges beyond school.
Is REACH right for your child?
REACH provides students with greater autonomy, and rewards those who are curious, independent, and ready to take ownership of their learning. Students who genuinely flourish in REACH are self-motivated to take full advantage of the opportunities offered.
REACH at Entry
In Entry, REACH students are accelerated through Year 7 and 8 English and Mathematics, building a strong foundation for progression into BSC’s vertically structured PACE21 program (Years 8 to 10) and early VCE when ready. Selection for REACH begins during transition from primary to secondary school and is based on multiple sources of evidence, including achievement data (such as NAPLAN), primary school recommendations, and PAT testing completed at BSC in November each year.
What they learn
The Entry REACH curriculum is broad and balanced, designed to prepare students for PACE21 subjects and electives. Through a range of teaching and learning approaches, students are supported to become curious, confident and independent learners.
In Semester 2, REACH expands to include two REACH-aligned electives from the full PACE21 suite, alongside Is water more precious than gold? - an integrated, inquiry-based elective. This experience positions students to make informed choices about their PACE21 Deep Learning elective subject selections for the following year.
PATHWAYS AND LEARNING (PAL) in REACH
PAL is central to BSC’s school community, providing students with strong, supportive connections with their peers and a dedicated PAL teacher who is their primary point of contact for academic and wellbeing support.
PAL teachers nurture student relationships and provide consistent guidance, care and mentoring as students engage in learning and self-development. They support students to navigate challenges, set goals and make informed decisions throughout their time at BSC.
REACH students remain in a dedicated PAL group to ensure continuity of mentoring and pathway planning. Learning alongside like‑minded peers allows students to balance academic expansion with wellbeing, while extending and enriching their learning across the secondary years.
REACH at PACE21
PACE21 is vertically structured to empower student agency, deep learning and real‑world readiness. REACH students continue to study English, Mathematics and PAL, alongside deep learning and specialist electives. Within this structure, motivated learners can accelerate, extend and begin VCE subjects early, based on readiness and performance.
Opportunities include:
Acceleration and early access
o Progression into PACE2 and PACE3 subjects with teacher recommendation
o Early enrolment in VCE subjects
Challenge and enrichment
o Academic events, excursions and incursions across all BSC Worlds
o Victorian High‑Abilities Program and Challenge and Enrichment Series
o Year 10 electives through the Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES)
Leadership and real‑world learning
o Student Leaders Program and Alpine School of Student Leadership
o Swinburne Children’s University (Personal Best)
o Entrepreneurial opportunities, including student employment, school‑based businesses and the Entrepreneurial Schools Project
Pathways to early VCE and university
REACH students can access a wide range of extension and pathway opportunities across their secondary years. In their graduate year, students may also study a first-year university subject through university extension programs, such as the University of Melbourne Extension Program, Deakin Accelerate, or La Trobe Aspire. These early entry university programs allow VCE students to gain credit, boost their ATAR, and experience campus life.
Leadership, voice and real‑world learning
REACH students are encouraged to develop leadership and agency through school‑based roles and projects. Opportunities may include student leadership pathways (such as House Leaders and School Captaincy) and involvement in initiatives that elevate student voice, community connection and entrepreneurial thinking.
